Resumen: RESUMEN Preface A field guide to the birds of Bolivia was long overdue and badly needed by birders, ornithologists, conservation biologists, and naturalists alike, both within and beyond the country's borders. Bolivia is THE richest landlocked nation on Earth for bird diversity, and the sixth richest overall despite its lack of coastal habitats. We think that it is no exaggeration to say that a major ornithological void has now been filled, finally. Asociacion Armonia started considering a "Birds of Bolivia" field guide project more seriously over a decade ago, with efforts to secure funding starting in 2003. In September 2005, with support from WWF Bolivia, we began with the more modest goal of producing a field guide to the birds of the Bolivian Yungas, a region that harbors about half of all species found in the country. Back then, this seemed to be a sufficiently monumental task for a small group of rookie field guide authors. Then, the 2008 global financial crisis hit hard, and WWF Bolivia was unable to continue funding the project. Fortunately, the Bolivian office of the Swiss Development Agency (COSUDE) became interested in supporting the field guide as a tool for promoting sustainable development through ecotourism; the project was redesigned in August 2009 and extended to cover all of Bolivia. Other institutions and individuals also supported this new vision and granted the final financial boost required to broaden the scope of the project. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the making of this book is that it involved an international group of authors and artists working together as an effective team across countries and continents without the backing and technical assistance of a commercial publishing company. The authors and artists together represent no fewer than nine South American, European, and North American countries - including Bolivia. Species accounts were mostly drafted and edited in Bolivia, and two Bolivian artists contributed illustrations of 199 species. Additionally, range map production, digital image processing, color plate design, typesetting, and printing all were done in Bolivia. The book you are holding is essentially a field guide made in Bolivia, for Bolivia. We truly hope that this book serves to draw well-deserved attention among birders and ornithologists to Bolivia's exceptionally diverse avifauna, and that it will become a catalyst for recreational bird watching, sustainable ecotourism, biodiversity conservation, and research on birds in the country. Lacking an ocean, Bolivia may not be able to compete with countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Peru in terms of total species richness, but no other South American country offers bird specialties of Amazonia, Andes, Chaco, cerrado and savanna biomes, all in one three-week birding tour. Which other Neotropical country offers thirteen species of macaws, two of them endemic? AVES BOLIVIA ANIMALES UTILES
